Cleaning & Care

Taking care of cast iron cookware is essential for maintaining its longevity and performance. Here’s a quick guide:
1. Seasoning: Before using, ensure your cast iron is well-seasoned. Apply a thin layer of vegetable oil or melted shortening to the surface and bake it upside down in a hot oven for about an hour. Repeat this process regularly to maintain the seasoning.
2. Cleaning: After cooking, avoid soap. Instead, use hot water and a stiff brush or sponge to scrub off food residues. For stubborn bits, you can use coarse salt as an abrasive. Rinse and dry thoroughly to prevent rust.
3. Storage: Store your cast iron in a dry place. If stacking with other cookware, place a paper towel between the pieces to absorb moisture.
4. Avoiding Acidic Foods: Limit cooking highly acidic foods (like tomatoes) in your cast iron, especially if it’s not well-seasoned, as this can strip the seasoning.
5. Regular Maintenance: After cleaning, apply a light coat of oil to keep the surface protected and well-seasoned.
With proper care, your cast iron cookware can last for generations!
