How to Clean a Cast Iron Dutch Oven After Cooking:
Note: Avoid using soap, steel wool, or placing it in the dishwasher.
If you decide to use soap or steel wool, you’ll need to re-season the skillet afterward. Just rub a thin layer of oil all over the skillet (inside and outside), then heat it on the stove or in the oven until the oil forms a protective layer.
- Pour hot water into the Dutch oven immediately after use.
- Use a sponge or nylon stiff brush to gently scrub the Dutch oven (use tongs to avoid scalding).
- Rinse thoroughly with hot water.
- Apply a layer of salt and add a small amount of hot water.
- Use a wooden shovel to scrape off tough stains.
- Rinse again with water.
- Dry the Dutch oven completely using a towel, and then heat it on the stovetop on low heat.
- Apply a thin layer of oil to season the inside and outside of the Dutch oven.
- Store in a dry place.
How to Restore a Rusted Cast Iron Dutch Oven:
- Scrub off the rust with steel wool and water.
- Wash the Dutch oven with soap and rinse thoroughly with water.
- Dry the Dutch oven using a towel, then heat it on the stovetop until it is smoking hot to ensure it's fully dry.
Note: Water is the enemy of cast iron, so ensure it's completely dry. - Apply a thin, even layer of cooking oil to the inside and outside of the Dutch oven.
Remember to wipe off any excess oil. - Place the Dutch oven upside down on an oven rack and bake at 180°C for 1 hour.
- Once the oven is off, let the Dutch oven cool down inside.
